How can I create a "flash" light effect from an LED?

I have a picture of an LED that I would like to show "mid-flash". I have played around with gaussian blurs and outer glows to show light emmitting from it, but the effects always look exactly that- glowing. I'm after some real punch and wow factor and can't think of where to begin. Help anyone!?

I hope I load these right, read backwards if you have to LOL
