i tried to do it and got the idea behind it, i will do it properly later but here is what i did.

first select a picture and make a render/cutout of the person/thing whatever. now save it as a psd.

open a new document in PS (preferably the same size as the render, if not then at least the same aspect/size ratio) and go to filter>sketch>halftone pattern, set the size to 1 (min) and contrast to 50 (max). Make sure your colour pallet is set at default (black foreground, white background).

go to select>colour range and select the black colour and fuzziness to 200 (max) click ok and the black colour will be selected, delete it. (make sure the layer is not locked otherwise it will bring up a fill box)

create a new layer beneath the stripes layer and fill it with a dark colour, i used black.

now select the stripes layer goto filter>distort>displace. here you have to play around with settings, it depends somewhat on the size of the render. i used 5 for the pixels horizontal and vertical, stretch to fit and wrap around edges. Click ok and it will ask you for a displacement map. Use the .psd file saved earlier of the render.

Using this method you should get what you want. well this is the photoshop method. There is a similar method for illustrator as well but i cant remember where i saw the tutorial for that, if i find it i will share it.

Hi Abdul,

I tried it, and I basically get a version of the pic split up into straight lines, but I would like the lines to follow the contours and shapes of the object.....any idea?

i forgot to mention that before you save your render as a psd to be used as a displacement map convert its colour profile to grayscale. i dont know what difference its gonna make but i will try that and share my result

EDIT: the grayscale didnt work in this case. With grayscale i only get a outline of the render with not much depth either.

For a displacement map psd, if your picture is in color, pick the channel which has the greatest contrast for the image, duplicate the channel and in the dialogue box, click the drop down under destination>document and click new. Then save your psd.
