Highlighting II help please

please indicate if I am anywhere near the realms of this phantom tattoo by identifying the number closest to it
I am guessing if we cant tell what it is and depending on what you need the tattoo for then this may be a lost cause as you may have to make the pic unrecognisable just to see maybe a threshold style tatoo that will have no detail in

Hi the Phantom! tattoo is:- using your numbering 2 and 3 its made up of pin pricks on a piglet obviously as the pig grows so does the tattoo hense the problem in reading it. It is needed to try to identify where the pig came from as these identify the source farm. we have a major issue with the supply of these pigs.

Your number 2 should be a numeric letter followed by 4 numbers it may be H 48?? as viewed in full sunlight
Thanks for the help.

mmm sorry but I am not of any help if I was to have a guess i would say 60 or 68 was in there. I dont suppose you have a camera that shoots raw images do you as you may have better look sharpening it more that way

Thanks that first number is def a 6. and that really helps, I had to reduce the size of the photo to be able to upload it but I am sorry I dont understand what you mean about a "raw image" I have a fugi finepix pocket camera, will that do it? would it help if I emailed you the full pic?

Here's what one can obtain using:

a) Only ACR (xmp file attached below as zip file); and

b) ACR followed by the dust and scratch filter operating only on the red dots.

I suspect that if you go back and tweak the ACR settings you will also be able to read the first character.

1) re: "...would it help if I emailed you the full pic?..."

Yes, it always helps if we can deal with the image directly out of the camera.

2) WRT "what's a raw file", some cameras provide a means to directly record the raw sensor data without even any in-camera processing (such as conversion to a JPG). I didn't look it up, but most point and shoot cameras don't provide this option. It helps a lot to have such data.

3) WRT future challenges like this, you should look up the fluorescence spectrum of the dye used for the tattoo. Some fluoresce substantially under UV light, and, if so, that may provide even more discrimination and you may not even need to use photoshop. Some recent tattoo dyes are manufactured specifically to fluoresce, so perhaps you can switch?

If the blue dye does not fluoresce and you can't switch dyes, a narrow band rejection optical filter over your camera, matched to the blue color, will almost always significantly enhance the contrast and likely not be very expensive.

HTH,

Tom M

PS #1 - I did some more tweaking and the first character is either an "H" or a "K".

PS #2 - By any chance is your request related to the porcine diarrhea virus epidemic? Send me a private msg if you work for the USDA-National Institute of Food & Agriculture. I have close ties there.
