Hi

This makes me imagine photoshop on those green-black screens, applying filters with punching cards.
You have more years of experience in photoshop, than I in life >_<
welcome

And yes, this place is super-mega-awesome cool (as we youngsters say it these days)

Thanks guys!

I started out in the business working in this place called a "darkroom" where I developed this thing they called "film" with something we used to call "chemistry."

I recently found out that my position as Production Coordinator is going to be eliminated due to corporate downsizing. I do have an opportunity to be the manager of the prepress department at the head office of the company I work for though. It's not a sure thing though, I'm just one of the candidates in the running.

I joined this site in hopes of finding freelance work. Is this a good place to find that kind of work?

Welcome to the forums, man!

I can't believe they'd put you in that position after 16 years of loyalty. Your next purchase should be a few jerry cans of gasoline and matches.

Gee, you're old just like Aunty Clare here. I learned photography techniques at Columbia College in Chicago where I went to school from <mumbles>1971 to 1975. Nothin' like a good acid bath!

As for freelance, we don't get all that much here. Not enough for a guy to survive doing PSG requests. Post an album on your profile page and direct freelance clients to it. And, as Paul says, it's tough competition. You never can be sure what the OP wants. If you check the board frequently (all hours) and jump on requests quickly, it helps. Clients like quick response and often are satisfied with the first to respond. Just like paramedics. If you come to my house in an emergency, I don't imagine I'd tell you the other one had an ETA of 12 minutes and I'd rather wait! Right Beastie? (Remote-Medic)

And as Paul points out, you need to be here a month and have 30 posts or more. But a month goes by fast, and some people find it easy to make frivolous posts, but I won't name names. God, it's tempting though. :bustagut:

Actually I've worked at the newspaper for 23 years. For the past 16 I've been using Photoshop. The previous 7 years were spent in the darkroom developing film, prints, shooting halftones and shooting negatives of newspaper pages.

Three years ago the company that did our printing bought the newspaper so I've only worked for them for a short time. I've been told several times that I'm the best image editor in the whole company but I guess that's no guaranty that I'm still going to be employed with them.

Here's a word of advice to the younger folk here. Don't get into the newspaper business.

What happened in the darkroom, stays in the darkroom.... right!

welcome welcome to the forum :)

And that is why photographers of "old" are so pale-skinned.

Just thought ya might want to know.

(maybe just need a little more developing time and a little more dodge and burn, lol)
