Hi, George here.
I have a basic knowledge of Photoshop, I'm a photographer and use it all the time. I have a problem which has baffled me all day. My problem is to paste a coloured selection into a black & white photo without the coloured selection converting itself to B&W.

Well you could have the coloured selection on a layer above your b/w photo. Though I have a feeling that's not quite what you mean.

Could you post an attachment so I can be sure of what the problem is.

the mode of the black and white photo can be greyscale
then you have to change the mode into RGB

It was the RGB/Greyscale setting that was the problem.
It's the silliest things that can confuse me.
It was a project for our club competition that I was having problems with.
I can't seem to insert the final image to show you.
