Help with Text and masks?

Basically, my wife saw this thing on etsy or pinterest or something and had the idea of putting our state song inside an outline of our home state - unfortunately, Kentucky isn't a box.... Can i make a mask or something with the outline of the state so that the text "naturally" or "easily" fits in?

Why? Just type it in over a layer with the state shape on it. Maybe I don't understand the question.

the thing is the state of kentucky is a funky shape and i want all the text to fill the outline of the state

Just type the text. Then enter CTRL T to transform and size it
To your shapes size.

You first need a shape of Kentucky and then try this.....

Type within a shape

Text within a shape.
