Putting text on a 3d object, I followed a tutorial to make a golfball and I did it successfully but now I want to make text that looks like its printed on the ball...any ideas?

Welcome !

You could also play with the blending modes/and opacity if you put a coloured text.

Another way is to rasterize the text, and apply it the same distortions as the image (spherize, displacement map...)

Or you restart the tut, but with the text merged on the background at the beginning of the tut...

An Idea might be to ask Phil directly at Photoshop Cafe's Forum... ;)
And report the info here!

1/ Type your text. See that it covers appr. the width of your sphere.
2/ Apply the Warp text tool (I chose Inflate as style). Rasterize text.
3/ Apply Spherize filter set to 100%
4/ Edit>Tranform to fit the text within the sphere and play a bit with the height (perspective).
5/ Copy the text layer.
6/ Set text layer 1 to Multiply 100% opacity
7/ Set text layer 2 (top layer) to Overlay, 50% opacity.
