Illustrator Help with project

I have taken back our companies logo files from our previous graphics guy, I am trying to use the logo on some artwork where the background is another image, however the way he has made it with shapes in illustrator has made it difficult for me to do.

In short I need help with the icon part "circular section" where i just want to remove the shape to show the background behind it.

I hope this all makes sense and someone will be able to assist.

Yeah, what he did was, he made the part that shows as a red arrow with a white background around it just as a white curve with an open space for the arrow. When sitting over the red square the arrow appears as a separate red part. I can fix this but not for free.
