Help with Old Photo

my first post so hope it is in right forum.

My sister has given me the attached photo (copy) of an old snap of her as a child, my other sister has the original but won't let us borrow to make a better copy.

I know I can add a serpia tone to the whole image, make it greyscale etc. But I would really love to take some of that glare away from the white dresses, without making it look to false or simply too grey.

any help and advise at a way or ways of doing this will be very much appreciated

Try adding some texture to the dress area.
Trouble is there's virtually nothing in the white area.
I went to Filter Gallery|Texture|Canvas and added some texture to the dresses.

I'm not sure what else can be done with such a poor quality image.

hadn't thought of that, thanks, I agree it is a terrible quaility, that sister has a better quiality copy but won't let me have it, she is funny like that.

The highlights are completely blown out so there is no recoverable detail. Perhaps the original is better...

you can draw the highlights in (dresses outline and such)but lots of work very tedious but that resolution not so reliable

I was thinking kind of the same thing, maybe find some pics of similar dresses and distort them in place as textures.

well thanks guys, appreciate the comments... I have had a little play adding textures very finely little of an improvement, but as has been said it is a terrible copy to have to work with. at a guess I would say sister had scanned it into her computer, printed it out with no or very low black ink in the printer. I the original must be 60 years old. Why she can't let me borrow it for a couple of days.. I don't know Thats family.

I will keep tinkering, certainly look for something similar to add.

once again many thanks.

I gave it a shot and just chopped out the lower pixels that were not there anyway. ;) but yes a better resolution woud work

It is going to take a lot of guess work but you need to add as much detail into the dresses, as their is in the faces etc. For example adding crease shadows to the dress pleats, or making the arms of the middle girls more visible.

I was thinking more like thisView attachment 4052. With a bit more time spent on it than what i did, I think it would look a lot better than just adding texture to something that didn't have that much texture to begin with.
