Help with layer masks

When I use layer masks on photographs it tends to fade parts of the photo... why is this?

An chance you could take a screenshot of the issue at hand.

If you are using refine edge / refine mask that is the issue. Look at your mask (hold alt and click on the mask thumbnail) do you see black in the white / white in the black ? those are the bits that PS missed...just grab a small brush...paint out the issues on the mask, and you will see the difference..simple mask cleanup.

Your settings in refine might need a tweak.
