Help with layer masks?

I am pretty new to photoshop and am having some difficulty with the brush tool. I am currently taking web design with the centre for distance education and am trying to do a fairly basic assignment with photoshop. So, I am being asked to first create a layer with an orange fill to it. Then I am asked to create a layer mask, I am then asked to put an image behind the orange which I am then asked to use the brush tool with black to see through the orange colour and through to the image. I am having no problem with this until I am asked to change the brush colour to white and go over the previously bushed areas and restore the orange colour. When I do this nothing happens. Sorry if that was confusing, any help would be much appreciated.

Are you sure you have clicked the layer mask icon to the right of the layer preview and then painted in white

you have to create a layer above the orange fill layer , put your image on that layer , then add a layer mask to the top layer with the image in it , you can then paint with black to reveal the orange under it , when the orange comes through you can then paint with white rub away the orange and reveal the image again

hope that makes it clear. make sure you are on the layer mask on the right or the image layer though

or you could add an image first then create a orange fill layer above that , then add a mask and paint black to reveal the image below , white to reverse . make sure your opacity is at 100% , you can lower this if you want to reveal less

Nevermind, I closed photoshop and opened it again and it worked. Wondering if there was some sort of glitch or I just no idea what I am doing. Anyway thank you both so much for your help. :)

If you are using quick mask...You need to set your 2 colors Black and White...after picking your BRUSH, click "control D" and your colors will be set. When using quick mask mode (looks red / orange) black and white will allow you to add (black) or remove(white) parts to your mask.

Be sure when your trying to paint that you actually have the mask selected and not the image in the same pane. Just FYI . Been there, done that
