Hi guys I'm new here,

I have been struggling to master the style used here by artist Joshua Budich, I have been searching the internet and spending many hours on photoshop the past few days trying to figure out how to add halftone/polka dots in the same colours, like the one used in the Star Wars print and the pattern used on Tyrell. Could some one please point me in the right direction to a tutorial, I'm going mad here trying to figure out how to colour my art.

Many thanks, Rob.

Hey Rob, as you have discovered, there are literally hundreds of halftone tutorials on the net! I certainly don't think I could offer any that might help your cause. With these types of works, it's really hard to pinpoint a specific technique that the artist may have used. It may be a variation of some simple techniques.

I know this may sound crazy, but I have, in the past, contacted the artist directly and asked them about a specific technique. You would be surprised how many will answer! Here is Joshua's FAQ page, you will find his email addy there. Give it a try.......what have you got to lose?

First, create new document. Use the settings on the image provided.

Then click ok.

Now Edit >> Fill

Use #b7b7b7 as a foreground colour.

Then Filter >> Pixelate >> Use default settings, click ok.

And you now have your very own halftone texture.

Thanks for replying so quickly. Now that I have the halftone texture how do I apply it in little sections using the colors used on my print, lasso tool?

Thanks in advance.

Rob, the dots are not really applied with a tool. They are generated using a filter(s) that interprets various tonal values of the image into the dot/halftone patterns. Your original must be more than just a plain line drawing. It should be fully shaded.

edit: Post an image of the art your wanting to use this technique on.

As Sam said, the halftone dots aren't applied with a brush, per se. However, there are many, many examples where artists have masked them away in certain sections and masked them to be visible in other sections.

BTW, the 1st example posted by the OP looks like stochastic halftoning, whereas the second looks like regular (ie, periodic) halftoning.

I'm still doing my line art in illustrator, it will be a while before I start colouring it. I'll bump the thread in due time, thanks for all the help so far.
