Help with Extract function

Help, please. I'm using the Extract function to highlight a section of an image I want to retain. When I click on "Preview" the section I want to retain is cut, green lines and all, and the rest of the image is retained! I'm obviously missing something simple, but can't figure it out.

You have to use the extract fill tool inside the area that you want to keep.
