Help with a transparent layer over picture/animation...

I'm not exactly sure I'm phrasing this right because I'm pretty new to Ps. I'd like to create something like the following:

suchbeautifulbrokenthings.tumblr.com/post/10255627676 (Sorry, I'd link it but I don't have a high enough post count.)

I've tried making a transparent text pic and merging that with another pic but it's definitely not working out how I'd like.

I'm working with cs5 and any step by step help would be incredibly awesome. Thanks in advance!

I know how to create a gif, at least the basics of one with Ps. I'd like to know how to get that first layer that is opaque and the transparent text. And how do I create something like that and have my animated pics flashing behind it?

Here's how you do the text layer. I', not sure if the gif is done in PS or AfterEffects or something like that. If you were to do it in PS, I guess you'd just have to put the text layer into every frame, but someone like Hoogleman will know better.

As for the white transparent layer and the blank text:
Make your white layer.
Type the text.
Hold down the ctl key and click the text layer icon to create a selection.
Select the white layer and press delete.
Now lower the opacity of the white layer.
I placed an image layer below so you can see how the transparency works.

Nothing to add except that I had my speakers cranked up when I clicked on your site. I nearly had a stroke.:lol:

I'm sorry Arielle, I didn't get email notification or overlooked it somehow. Have you figured it out? I'm not entirely sure of what you're asking.

I think? Delete the text layer and lower opacity on the white layer.

No problem, I played around with it and figured it out. Thanks a lot!

I am still wondering how to create the animation if anyone has tips. If I just add the text to each picture in the gif then it will constantly be flashing as the pictures do instead of staying steady as a mask on all of them.

Was going to but I've run into another problem haha...

This is a very newbie thing to ask but if I save the finished project as a gif or png and try to upload it to my Tumblr, the animation is gone. So it only shows the one frame plus the text. Am I missing something?

very nice. you made it and it's very cool! glad we could be a little bit of service to you.

I would like to express an opinion. Most everybody seems to disagree with me though! What would you think of slowing down the animated motion some? Makes it much harder to appreciate I think when it flies by.

I agree with Clare (sometimes):) only joking my little minkey do:redface: how about fading into each other - BTT:neutral: or how about freeze each one for a second or so?
Nice job though, thanks to Clares help good one mate.

I've been playing around with it a bit as far as slowing it down and etc., I think for this particular one I'll leave it as is but I have a couple others I want to try. :)

minkey do . . . you really are cruisin for a bruisin big guy. I'm going to call the honeymoon in Malibu off, so there!

oh BTW... thanks Paul.

She did a gr8 job. Arielle, there's a different technique for this kind of thing if you want to make BG come through letters or shapes, very clean, very easy. Just FYI.
