Help required (queen album cover)

I'm looking to copy the queen greatest hits 3 album cover and personalise it with my own photo. It's the black and white image where freddie mercury is in the background and the other three are below.

I've done the background image ok but what i can't work out is how to do the lower part. I've tried a threshold but that loses the detail that they have, it seems that they have made the image black and white but what i can't work out is how they have made the skin white. When i do it my skin goes grey?

I know i'm being stupid here but my mind is blank, can anyone help?

For anyone that wants to know, all i did was play around with the contrast and brightness.

I don't understand what exactly you mean. Maybe upload us a picture of your work? Use Image Shack to upload if possible.
