Help! My Photoshop Elements 9 won't let me add a Text layer!

I've been beating my head against a wall trying unsuccessfully to add both a layer of Text and a jpg to a page. I've clicked the Text function, but the only thing that appears when I type is a blue line. ANYONE KNOW WHY? Or WHAT in the world I can do to get it to function?!

Also when I tried every way I knew to add a jpg it won't work. I clicked to open the image, to open a new layer and add the image, opening the image in the bottom tray and then dragging to the page -- but all that got dragged was an invisible square. When I clicked edit it said to "undo drag image"! So something invisible got dragged!

WHY wouldn't it show up! It seems that section of the page turns everything invisible! It allowed me to add the background color, but nothing else! The color square is black, but still nothing shows up when I either try to type in the Text mode or to add a jpg. ANY SUGGESTIONS would be MOST appreciated!

Many thanks!

As an addition to this above post, for some BIZARRE unknown reason the Layer I'm trying to use (tho I opened several layers to try to use there, but NOTHING works!) the layer has a weird url in it! I have no idea how it got there, and can't seem to delete it! And how can I delete it and get the text to function there?! ANY IDEAS?

Again many thanks!

screen capture of the page you are working from so we can see your work through.

When I went back I succeeded in deleted the url that appeared in the right column of the layers. And somehow I got the text to type. It's after midnite. Going to bed. Tomorrow I'll complete the text & see if I can add the jpg. Thanks for letting me vent. ;-) Goodnite.
