Hi, I am dodging a solid color portal object which is made up of a beam and
2 side columns. When I dodge horizontally i get a nice uniform lighter tone in the
middle. When i try to taper the columns vertically I get a tapered lighter tone
wider and the top and almost coming to a point at the bottom. If I try running
the brush bottom to top the bottom of the lighter tone is still narrower and the
top is wider.

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to stop it. I have chosen a brush\
preset with a uniform width and no tapering. HELP!BRUSH TAPER.jpg

You can select any shape for it in the same way as the brush tool. If you want to see the actual brush shape change you preferences under cursors.

agreed. also i have found that when you add multiple adjustment layers, for example levels and curves, it gives that same unwanted effect.
