help creating nav bar with a difference

Sooty, if you look closely you'll see their image is made up of three concentric circles - with some layering & masking to achieve the image to stripey effect transition.

For the small glass Mac-ish buttons there are plenty of tutorials for. Just ask Mr. Google. I actually just copied the ones from the site.

I'm not sure if you know the path tools. They are pretty useful for creating nice, crisp shapes such as these, and allow for re-usability. This will show under the "pen" tool as well as the "shape" tools. With the circle shape too you can then create the circles as paths, fill them with the appropriate images/colours and add layer masks to allow one image to merge with the next. Leaving them as paths instead of filled shapes allows you to resize the path for the next circle.

Then create some depth by adding drop shadows to layers. Also do the cut-outs etc. to break up the plain circular shapes.

Here's a quick one I did - obviously not as classy as the one on the site, but hey, you've gotta start somewhere. The page curl effect I think is built into some plug-in or other program.
