I am wanting to create a Button Sprite for my Navigation Menu. The problem is, I am not very good with Graphics, this even though I have Photoshop, Fireworks and Illustrator. Crazy right?

Anyways, I have looked at a few Button Sprites from other Websites. I had found one the I am interested in, but I want to tweak it just a little. This so that I am not copying, well just a bit, but I want mine to only have some of the same filters so to speak.

What would be the best tool for achieving such a Sprite, Photoshop maybe, or how about Fireworks or Illustrator?

Also, what Layer Styles would I use if I am using Photoshop, even the other two, Fireworks and Illustrator?

Much help needed here....

Note: It's the Middle Button that I want to re-create.... I would like to know how to get the top edge shine/ glow....

Are you sure you have posted the right image ? I can see square, black upper half a bit to grey black lower half with a small white rounded edge.

Hey peta62....

Sorry for being kinda sloppy with my thread. Yes, it is the right image. I guess what I am really asking is, how can I get the same Shiny Edge as the Middle Tab in the Sprite?

Hello mooapo, do not worry, you are not sloppy, but I do not see anything shiny, just the white, but that is not middle one, I see just this :

I see.... Well.... In the image, there are three Tabs. Top, Middle and Bottom.... The top being the darkest, the middle (The One Of Interest ), and the the bottom, which is white.

I would like to recreat the Middle Tab. And if you look close, you will see that the Very Top Edge of the Middle Tab, it has a shine to it. How can I get that same shine?

If it is done in Photoshop, I believe it is a subtle linear gradient. It could possibly be a layer effect of an outer glow or inner shadow, but that might create the complication of containing the glow, rasterizing the shape. You could try all 3 and see what comes closest for you. Someone else may have additional ideas.

Thank you ibclare.....

I think I found kinda what I was looking for.... Close at least... I used a bevel at 90 degrees tweaked it a little...

Good for you mooapo. One thing about Photoshop, if there is one way to do something, there are two or three more ways. Enjoy the learning.

Yep peta, you're blind! :bustagut:

If you look at the image, it is white, grey, & black. Each of those colors (stacked atop one another). he is calling a tab and each one has softly beveled/rounded edges. He is interested in the middle grey area which has a glowy top edge. See it yet?

If not, I prescribe 2 aspirin and call me in the morning, then make an appointment with your optometrist!
