Hello everyone,

Just a quick self-introduction:

I'm a graduate student working in the biological sciences, and I'm hoping to take advantage of some of my design background to develop some useful images to use in my research. I have a working knowledge of PS and a barely working knowledge of AI, but I'm hoping to master both these programs through the information available online and on this forum. Hopefully these skills might help make my work a bit more visually compelling, and perhaps also allow me to make info-graphics to teach folks some science.

Cheers,
S

Welcome to PSG, sancor.

Photoshop isn't just for designer. It's for everyone in any profession.

And in the medical sciences, it's a good idea and makes for a better visual presentation to have your images retouched or enhanced.

Enjoy what we have to offer in the forum.

Welcome!

If you are doing biological image processing (vs. presentation graphics), and you aren't already familiar with ImageJ, you should definitely acquaint yourself with it (http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/ ).

It is extremely useful in for cell and colony counting, false colors, automated dimensioning including perimeters and statistics for histology, etc.. Probably 50% of the false color images of actin-myosin, metabolic markers, other differential stains, etc. that weren't produced by the software supplied by microscope mfgrs came through ImageJ. There are a huge number of free bio-related plug-ins available for ImageJ.

In addition, if you anticipate becoming a truly hard-core, roll-your-own image processing guy, you also will need to get *very* familiar with the MatLab Image processing toolbox.

That being said, PS is the jack of all trades and you can't go wrong learning it as a general purpose tool.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,

Tom M
