Hello everyone, hope everyone is doing well. I thought I would join this forum to try to get some insight on where to start learning how to photoshop. My idea all started when I started planning my daughter's 1st birthday party. I thought "huh, I could make my daughter's invitations to her birthday party!" Needless to say and to make a long story short, I started investigating what version I needed just to create invitations, and cards, just little projects. I ended up with CS5 Master Collection, and Photoshop CS5.5 Extended, or something like that. I now think I could have just had the invitations custom made for what I've spent on these programs. I've watched tutorials, and Adobe TV, read so many threads til my eyes hurt, but still no invitations! It's a learning experience! If anyone could just give me some direction, I would so appreciate the advise.

Welcome welcome Elena,

Where to start learning PS (photoshop)? hmm good question. Depending of what you allready know about PS there is a lot and a lot where you can start off with, like you said, watching tutorials, and eventualy find the right place at this Guru forum where you can find usefull information that helps to work on your project.

But meanwhile back to creating the invitations you should use your own imaginations.
You can find a lot of examples with a simple google search, then take a look at them and think of how it was created and also find some usefull elements you think you can use like balloons, a star and all that kind of things and add them into your invitations.

I think invitations for kids should stay a bit simple and easy to make, like adding border arround the cards and such.
Only a few things you should keep in mind is how you want them to be printed before creating them e.g. the size, if you want them printed both sides of the paper and will you fould the paper once it is printed.

So there you go,..... (don't excactly recreate cards you find on the internet, but make them more your own creations :) )
There is a lot of things you can pick up from this great forum and use them for any projects you might want to make and even invitations !!

My little thoughts,
Dreamers.

Thank you so much Dreamers, for all the great info! I truly appreciate the words of kindness and experience! I unfortunately still haven't even found where to start. I don't even know where to begin. There are so many different programs in the Master Collection. I really don't know whether to use the Master Collection program, or CS5. I really just think I'm in over my head, and only 10 days until my baby girls birthday party. Thinking maybe I should just head on over to Wally World and buy the invitations. Thanks again!

Hi Nubia_Elena, welcome to the forum.

The Adobe Master Collection is way way overkill for making invitations. To my knowledge, unless someone sold you a pirated version, it would cost you around $2200 (or more?) which is a bit more than printing costs, lol.

Of course, you can use Photoshop for this. You can use InDesign. You can use MS Word or Publisher. And there are probably programs or websites set up to do just invitations without any expense.

I hope you get those done and give Photoshop a try for other things, like maybe editing the photos from the party.

Welcome to the forum, Nubia_Elena.

If you feel that there wouldn't be time to learn PS in oreder to create your card, you can try designing in one in MSWord. You can create a simple two-fold/half A-4 (that'll be 2 cards in one A-4 sheet) .

Since you've spent a lot for CS, give time to learn. It may come in handy for future projects or if you are interested in creating serious art. You'll never know what you can create in Photoshop unless you give it a try.

Enjoy your learning curve here.

Sorry all for the late response. You have all given me great advise. I have been learning some of the basics in PS. I have created my invitations, as well as water bottle labels, and candy wrapper labels. I still have so much to learn, but am on my way. Oh, and ibclare, I didn't buy a pirated version of master collection. My mother had it for some reason or another, so i borrowed hers and installed it on my computer, and yes she did tell me not to scratch it, or let anything happen to it, that it was very expensive. The CS5.5 I purchased used at a local computer store. I feel in the long run it will be well worth the money I did spend. I cannot figure out how to unlock the layers when I open a new picture. Basically I "Binged" an image I liked. When I open it in PS the layers list to the lower right says Background, and it is locked. I tried the double clicking it to unlock it, and Ctrl + double click, as stated in several parts of this forum, and nothing works. Normally just have to paint over something I want to fix. But, hey I am learning!!!!

I definitely agree with you. In the long run, it will be worth the money for certain. Have fun with the learning process and remember, we're always here to help!
