Hello all,
I'm (obviously) new to the forum and the help I have seen is amazing. I got to say for the record that I have been here before but never took the time to register and become a member. The reason is simply because I don't have much to give as advices as you guys do but I am full of questions...But I have 1 now and I will hope to get some help too.

Thanks to all 8))

Hiya, heretic messiah.

Welcome to the forums. Feel free to ask away. Most often someone knows an answer fairly quickly.

Cheers~

:)

Welcome to the community Heretic, we hope you enjoy your stay. [excited]

For anyone else reading this that has not yet signed up... it's most definately NOT a requirement that you be able to help others before joining the community. All that is required is that you enjoy using Photoshop; being able to share your experiences is a bonus, that might help others to understand and use the program better. But that will happen over time eventually. It's not something that you need to force out just to becaome a member here. :righton:

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome. ;\ I will maybe post some of my little work...yesnothing like some of you but I like it! Like Keeper said, it's just a matter of having some fun... [honesty]

Welcome, heretic messiah. :)

Please post your work. I'm sure we will like to see it.

welcome heretic messiah!
You need to save a small version of the image, and you can use the add an attachment menu (on the bottom of the new post window) to upload an image.

Mine are usually pretty big...the one in my sig is one of them and is the smallest [honesty]

Hi again h-m.

Uploading files are best saved from Photoshop by using Save For Web... Generally speaking, an image 600 pixels X 800 pixels high is the largest you should consider posting and you should try to keep the file size down. I never save a JPEG above a 60 setting and often find an adequate result down as low as 30.

Then there is a forum limit. In each post you can add two images. The total combined file size of images per post can be no larger than 200K. I try to keep my images as small as possible to still look good or get my point across. Mostly that is because people with dial-up connections have to download the images and it takes time to load a thread with lots of big images.

Does that include signatures Welles, because heretic messiah's signature is 230k and that spread over 4 posts makes almost 1MB.

And how about outbound images? in this thread I see several images that both exceed physical size and size limit:

Another example is this thread:

...and there are more examples.

Do understand, it's not my intention to overwhelm your job as a moderator though, just showing you some examples ;)

Hi JoeD,

I'm always curious about stuff too. I'm not overwhelmed except this week has been more repairing and replacing old components in my system, rather than using it. New printer, CPU fan, larger HD in my FireWire external, new version of the Mac OS, system maintenance and total backup, yadda yadda quack quack.

Ain't computers fun! ;)

I thought sigs were no more than 255 text characters. I have them turned off in my Profile so I've never seen his and can't answer as I have never investigated signature possiblities.

As to how people get larger than the allowed size images posted, they can host the image on another server and use the Img tag to load it. In that manner the forum limitations don't come into play. I've used that technique on occasion myself when a smaller image just won't do. Generally speaking, I try to keep my uploaded images at no bigger than 450 X 600px.

Ouch! I had them turned off.
Heretic Messiah, that signature is huge!
IMHO, they should not be larger than a web banner. Some people still use 56k, and big sigs like yours disrupt the readability of a forum...

Don't you think that it would be possible to make a smaller one?

I went and turned on signatures to see heretic messiah's. Yes, as sPECtre pointed out, a signature is usually a little saying or small banner rather than a full image.

However, h-m I took your image and ran it through PS's Save For Web... and dropped the file size to 40K with very little loss of quality considering I was recompressing a JPEG. With a little practice you can get your file sizes much smaller for web use. Part of the skill for creating images for display on the internet is a balance between file size and quality. I once read a very successful designer of web pages say that he would drop the file size until he noticed degradation of the image and then squeeze it a little more!

Thanks again Welles 8))
I've taken the liberty of using that url post of my pic you posted in my updated profile.

Heretic messiah, DO NOT use an image posted here as your signature: that is stealing bandwidth! normally, signatures should be hosted on your allocated space from your access provider.

Yes i'm afraid i have to agree with sPECtre's point here.

Sigs are an optional part of a board's membership and as such have specific guidelines and limitations. One of which is pixel size: standard 468x60 banner maximum. And they should also be hosted/servered from some place other than the Forum's server.

Sig files can generate a lot of bandwidth and slow down the rendering/serving of the pages. Which is why i have the option in user Prefs now to allow each member to turn them off or on as they choose.

It's not a big deal at the moment heretic as i've no specific outline posted yet concerning signatures, and you had no way of knowing this stuff. But just so everyone now knows, i will be posting specific rules very soon directed at the use of signatures. The outline will apear in the user Profile page and the FAQ page.
