Hi folks, I am a total noob to photoshop but want to undertake a small project to create an image to have silkscreened onto a t-shirt. Basically I want to copy this exact image (a), with the shading on the lettering and everything surrounding to be on top of this modified lettering (b) <-(this is what I have done so far, :) )

I am completely stuck as to how to create that first outer border with the rounded edges leading off the h and e of 'house' and around to meet and merge into the m and c of 'music'

As well, I have no idea how to shade the letters and copy the light beam effect coming out as in image (a).

Is this is a realistic endeavor for a noob such as myself ? Is there any feasible way to copy this straight from the image into the other ?

Thank you ever so much in advance.

Hi shaggapuss! Welcome to PSG!

I see exactly what you mean, but unfortunately I don´t know how to do it. It looks to me like it´s been made in 3D program or something, but as far as I´ve understood, there is something you can do things like that with in CS5, but I only have CS3. There are a lot of people here who have CS5 so, I´m sure they will show up and help you soon.

Sorry this wasn´t much help, but I just wanted you to know that, your request has been noticed, unlucky for you that it was by me. lol!

You could try bevel and emboss, and maybe some gradients, maybe even some layer styles, but I have no idea how you get the text to go around the outside like the one you have shown. Oh, well, I´ll shut up and leave the stage for someone who knows what they are talking about lol. :)

you can do it without doubt. first of all, create a new layer and press U. then choose the rounded rectangular tool and set its radius to 45 px or sth like that. now you can draw the outer border as a path. it will be a simple rounded rectangle. now choose a simple hard rounded brush and set its size what you want the border's thickness to be. next step is to choose the path palette and right click on it->stroke path. turn off "simulate pressure" and click ok.

now you have the outer border. next step is edit->transform->distort and edit->transform->skew. this way you can set the border to the shape of the text.

last step: add some layer affect, ie. bevel and emboss to it.

last+1: erase the parts of the border where it meets with the texts "house" and "music".

To achieve lightning effects use Gradient Overlay and dodge/burn tool. You have to dodge bottom left of the text. After you created the shape, add an Outer Glow with Hard Light as Blend Mode, or you can try playing with blending modes.

Made a rough template using you font and the border then traced it out with the pen tool. Little outer glow and drop shadow.
