Recently taken up photography as a hobby and trying to learn as much as I can
Quickly realized I need to learn software programs as well to get the looks I want

Interest is primarily in landscapes, dramatic but realistic
Was going to purchase Lightroom but ended up going for the 9.99 per month cc which left me with having to learn photoshop too!
Just returned from a great vacation and want to get some large canvases of some pics so need to learn quick and get them looking good before printing
Cheers,
Rogerthat

Welcome to the forum.

Tho I'm not on CC (yet) , that's a sound 9.99 per month investment. As well as a sound choice to sign up here. We'll try and help you out with your PS learning curve in answering most of your questions.

Cheers.......

Thanks guys
Yeah I was content to spend the $150 or so for lr and glad I went for the monthly fee instead
I like lightroom and learned quickly how to improve picture quality but just as quickly found the healing brush not very effective and so am now turning to photoshop
Have a picture with some tree branches in the way and a tricky background been working on it for countless hours ; can get rid of the branches but usually looks smudged where some of them where
Photoshop is so much more powerful than lightroom
Playing around a bit with the ps HDR 32 bit functions on some bracketed photos I took, etc

The whole layer concept though is very foreign to me and obviously will take time to get comfortable with

Anything new will require your tenacity. Getting daunted by the task and giving up isnt the answer most especially if the solution may be hidden just around the bend.

As a master once said to a pupil in some TV show.... "Patience , young grasshopper"............

When you have the 'ah ha' moment with the layer concept, you'll realize just how simple and elegant it is! Early on it was masking that I struggled with, but when it finally made sense it was 'Katie bar the door"!

But if you had to prioritize a tool or technique, what would you suggest?

I would say the Pen Tool and Curves adjustment layers.
