Hello Everyone,

First off, thank you all for the time and effort you put in to this excellent site and forum. /cheers to you all :righton:

Ive never used Photoshop before, but I've taken this sites advice and have been just clicking about on Photoshop buttons and seeing what they do for starters. Using Photoshop 7.0

Currently I'm trying : http://photoshopgurus.info/intermediate/page_curl/pagecurl.shtml

Im a bit stuck on Page 3, Step 2 (Creating the missing Corner)

Here is a Quote :

Once you have this Path shape created, create a new layer, move it below the 'paper' layer, then right-click (MAC: long-click) anywhere within the path area and choose the "Fill Path/Subpath" option from the pop-out menu. This will fill our shape with a solid colour

Ive made the path (triangle) with the pen tool by making 3 anchor points ?

Seems to work ok and look just like the example on the right hand side.

The Problem is :
- I cant seem to make the new path (triangle shape) a new layer
- because of this I can't seem to fill path/subpath.

I hope I've asked my question clear enough, so that someone might be able to give me some additional advice.

Thank you again,
JustStarting

Hi and welcome to the board JustStarting :righton:

No problem about the extra post; has already been deleted ;) ...gives me something to do :bustagut:

Mark (nickname TheKeeper) wrote these tutorials and it's just a matter of time before he can give you the answers you need.
To be able to help you, I should go to the tutorial myself for which I don't have enough time at the moment.

Do know that this tutorial is for intermediate users, so you might (don't know for sure, but Mark can tell you that) have some problems to understand certain steps if you skipped the basic tutorials.

Make sure that you check out this thread later this day or the next day. :)

Welcome JustStarting! You do know, if you get obsessed with this board (like me :D ) Then in three yrs. when your expeirienced in photoshop, you won't be just starting! :D ;)

Hello Gaussian !

Thank you for your reply...

Aye, I read that this is for an Intermediate, but I didnt really see any specific beginner tasks (other then click about)

Im making progress again... now im just reversing the gradiants and filling the "corner" in..

3 years to get experienced? [confused]
Yes Alistair, if you want epxeriment at the same time with Wings 3D, Terragen, Cinema 4D, Anim8or, Bryce, 3DS Max, Maya, Vue D'Esprit, Truespace, 3D Canvas, Strata 3D, Blender, etc...then it sure takes 3 years...maybe even 10 :bustagut: :bustagut:

WOW thats a ton of programs to learn !!

Welp I'm a bit stuck again.. LOL I'm attempting this part now...

Creating some edge thickness:
We'll add a thin edge highlight to the curl, to help give some subtle depth to our paper. Duplicate the curled corner layer you created. Drag this duplicate layer below the original, and fill the shape with a solid white. Now click on the original curled corner layer and using the MOVE tool and arrow keys, nudge this layer 2 pixels down.
Notice the thin edge highlight that appears along the top of the curled edge? It's very subtle, but it helps give the paper some visible thickness

Challenge is that when I move the original corner down 2 pixels via the arrow keys... it moves down just fine, BUT the top edge of the triangle does not... ie its more like the triangle is growing 2 pixels from the bottom, while the top portion stays anchored.. if that makes sense.

Ive made the copy black so you all can see the effect (its suppose to be white, as this is to make a white edge on the top of the trianglee)

Welcome aboard JustStarting! :) When you make it through this 'page curl' tutorial, you'll have to change your user name! :D

Your progress, thus far, looks great! It's been "eons" (defined in PS terms as "weeks") since I did this very same tutorial and I'm puzzled as to why you've landed up where you're currently at... [confused]

Rather than go back to the drawing board, to work through it again (which will take some time), I'll let TheKeeper (Mark, the writer of this tutorial) clear things up for you. Rest assured, he checks in on a regular basis and you'll get his reply soon enough! ;)

In the meantime, "kudos" to you... This is, by no means, an easy tutorial for someone "just beginning" with Photoshop! :D :righton:

Welcome, JustStarting! You really are making some progress, although sometimes it may not seem like it :)

Gaussian and Wendy are right....at this point, Mark is probably the best one to answer your question, and unlike some webmasters, he's active on these boards.

But don't ever hesitate to ask a question; someone will answer it. And you may run across a question that you know an answer to...that's what keeps these boards great!

Gaus, I think im settling down! haha. Poser's a jiffy and right when I loaded that thing I new what I was doing. Wings 3d, well, have you seen my car yet? Im still trying to weld theose two sides though [upset] :D Terragen... LEARNING? There's nothing on that thing t even learn! You open it up, select what you want, and generate the terrain, only thing I have to work on is persistance of a beutiful well balanced terrain :D ;) Cinema 4d... well, first I need to buy that :D , but I could always give myself a head start! Im getting a hold of Anim8or, but it has a couple errors and it confuses me a bit. I will get bryce, but for now, terregen is my best land generator buddy :D 3DS MAX, I can't wait till I get that thing bought!!! Maya, well.. I've decided heck no! That thing is way to complex for me for now, Ill learn all the little things and bigger things like cinema 4d or 3ds, and then go on to maya, the master of em all (i think) ;) Vue D'Esprit??? What's that? O, is that the landscape generater I was testing? Or is that something else? Truespace, well I've just discovered winrar, so now I can finally download and install it :bustagut: 3d canvas, same situation. Strata 3D, I think im workin with enough progs for now!!! Blender, ya I came, I tried, and I gave up :{ But, I'll always come back for another try, and that is when I'll suceed. Truely gaus, I think theres no problem if I can multi-task more than anyone on this board, but it seems lik you think working with more than one prog is a sin! :D :D :D ;) O, BTW of POSER, Im making a animated model for a flash website, it will also have a voice engine [excited] :

Then we both must find me a priest soon :bustagut:
I was just trying to explain that one doesn't need 3 years to be kinda experienced in Photoshop, just some dedication.
It's fun to try out all that new 3D stuff...funny, I even made something in Photoshop that expresses that.
The only thing that I can say your case...you seldom finish something [stuned] (yes, I'm straightfoward, get used to it :D )

Welcome JustStarting, this is a tough tutorial for a beginner, and I am one of them. Tried, tried and tried again, and eventually got something reasonable. Lots of help in the forums, and I believe whoever said it takes three years, with my slow brain it may take longer. Good luck.

Greetings JustStarting, glad you could join our Forum. Hope you enjoy your stay. [excited]

It appears that you're moving through that tute quite well all things considered. Usually, the only reason a tute is labeled "Beginner", etc is because of the knowledge needed to manuever through the menu options and perform certain functions. Other than that, anyone should be able to do my tutes, provided they think clearly and take their time at them. ;)

You current problem should be easy to resolve.
As mentioned in Step 2 on Pg 4...
The bent corner image you created on it's own layer... to get the highlight edge, just duplicate that bent corner layer and move the duplictae below the original layer. Change the colour fill to solid white, and nudge the original (gradient filled) bent corner image down a couple pixels; using the down arrow key.

And that's all there is to it. [honesty]
Does that make sense to you now?

PS: one thing to make sure of is that no selection is active when doing this step. Press Ctrl+D before starting the step, just to make sure.

PPS: make sure you're wearing the proper safety gear if you're intent on trying the "Realistic Glass/Plastic Pill Button" tutorial! [saywhat]

Thanks Mark !

Fantastic you and the other contributors have time to reply :)

I'm going to redo this "Tute" again tonight.. well after the Canucks beat Dallas $$$

The Button Tute is great fun as well, I already notice new frown lines on my forehead :)

I'll also be looking for some tute on making text look good, as I'm making my first web page this week as well.

I digress...

Thanks again !!

/cheers

"Alistair Gaus, I think im settling down! haha. Poser's a jiffy and right when I loaded that thing I new what I was doing.:
