Hello to all....Looking for a little help... I am trying to create a canvas to do some work. I want the center to be white and for it to fade to a solid black on the edges... the canvas is rectangle in shape... I have attached a file that i tried to get the effect on by basically making 4 triangles and then doing a gradient overlay from center out... the result is what i am looking for, however you can see an X going thru the middle from the 4 rectangle gradients....

If anyone has any suggestions as to how i can accomplish what i am trying to do without getting the X in the middle.... please let me know.... ANY help or suggestions is greatly appreciated... Thanks...Dave

Hi 1adam-12

When you are creating a gradient whit those rectangular characteristics, you will most likely end up whit that "X" shape on the middle as you mentioned, this happens due to the shape in which the gradient is applied.

If you want to avoid this kind o behavior, I'll recommend using another technique/work around, like creating your rectangular shape any size you need and then using the Gaussian blur filter until your shape edges will fade out into your background "solid color filled layer underneath".

Or, you could apply the same blur but this time instead of using the Gaussian blur, you could use the Shape blur and then choose any shape you have from your shapes palette, and use it as your blurring pattern.

Hope this helps.

#1r_M4x1mu$ ..thanks for the tip... however, you confused me a little.... I tried using a white sheet then amking a black box on the edges... then a gausian blur to the black box.... that gave me SOME WHAT of what i want, except i have a HARD edge on the black.... i hate to trouble you anu more... can you provide a little more detail.... THANKS again...Dave

The black box as you mentioned should be a layer filled whit solid black and placed underneath your white sheet.

Remember, when you apply a Gaussian blur, on your white sheet, your sheet edges will fade out, to give you the gradient illusion, so it means that your white sheet "smaller white box" should be created on it's own layer and placed above your black background.

OK... i THINK i got it... might not be how you were saying to do it..... please look at the attached file and let me know....THANKS again...Dave

Yeah, that's pretty much what i'm referring to, but the white box should be on it's own transparent layer "new layer", don't just create your white box on a black filled layer, it has to be on it's own layer, so you can work some more and have more control over it, also still be able to modify it later on. "like apply layer stiles, some more blur, masking, transforming, etc."

OK... look like i got it now... so maybe you can help me with ONE more thing... i have done this before.... but it looks like i forgot how i die it...

I have a person MASKED out of a background.... the layer has a layer mask... i now what to take JUST the masked out person and bring them into another picture.... I know i can bring that picture into the masked picture, but i have to take the masked person OUT because i have MORe than one to do....

I thought i could just use the magic wand and select on the canvas, but that is not working.. I have done this before, but i just cant remember what i did,,,

If you got your person out, using a layer mask, then just create a selection off your mask, and then you can bring your person to a new layer via new layer from selection, "Layer>Layer via Copy", the only thing left to do will be to do the same thing for every object to be extracted, and positioning it accordingly to your needs.

Depending on the complexity of your selections i'll also try some other extracting tools/techniques, like pen tool, channels, ect.
