Grass Text Tutorial Help :(

Hello. I am not new to PS, but new to using layer masks, etc. I am trying to follow this tutorial: Grass-tutorial and am having no luck at all.

I don't know what I am doing wrong and have tried about 60 times to figure it out. I even contacted the author but what he said made no sense to me.

For someone experienced with PS this can be completed in about 5 minutes, i'm sure.

Here is my problem:
right in the beginning it goes bad...slides 26-31 from the video are just confusing to me. for one, i don't get the moving "ants" outline when i create a layer mask, i get a solid, white line. for 2 when i create the layer mask and all that the background grass doesn't disappear and the big black box next to the grass pic in the layers tab is just a white box with simple text that says grass, not the block letters like yours and there is no link lock icon thingy separating them either as it is on yours. i don't get it :( i've tried it several times now. i really want to use this technique for a project i'm doing.

his reply was this:
You are basically control clicking the text layer just to make it a selection. Then with that selection you click the grass layer and click the "add layer mask" button. Then you will contract that selection by 3 points to create the work path. The work path is where the brush is used to stoke the the mask to get the fuzzy grass outline. This is an advanced tutorial so if you haven't used Photoshop masks and brush effects it might seem complicated but its not.

can someone help me figure out what i'm doing wrong? mainly, what happens is that i don't get the "marching ants" when i create the layer mask, and when i make the "selection" the grass texture should fill the text but it doesn't. please help! thanks!

Make sure you don't have Selection Edges turned off. Check out the View->Extras.

The author is absolutely clear and simple:

First you go to text layer and load layer as a selection. The quick way to do it is to Ctrl-click on a T icon of the text layer in the layers pallete. The hard way is menu Selection->Load Selection...->OK.

Next you go to grass layer and add a layer mask by clicking the proper button in the layers pallete. Or, again, the hard way: menu Layer->Layer Mask-> Reveal selection.
