Hi. I've just inherited a computer from my brother. It's a great spec except for the graphics card. It currently has a GeForce 9800 GT and it just wont run CS6 at all (at least I think it's a graphics problem). It crashes whenever the graphics acceleration comes into play, and that's a lot of the features I need! I've updated the card drivers and Photoshop.

I've just read this http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Adobe-Photoshop-CS6-GPU-Acceleration-161/
From that my first thoughts are to go for the Geforce GTX 680 2GB and be done with it. I just need CS6 to work!! Here is the speccy of the computer

Operating System
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i7 980 @ 3.33GHz 44 °C
Gulftown 32nm Technology
RAM
12.0GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6X58D PREMIUM (LGA1366) 33 °C
Graphics
QHD DVI (2560x1440@59Hz)
512MB GeForce 9800 GT (XFX Pine Group) 53 °C
Hard Drives
1863GB Western Digital WDC WD20EARS-00MVWB0 ATA Device (SATA) 35 °C
112GB SanDisk SDSSDX120GG25 SCSI Disk Device (SSD) 30 °C
559GB Western Digital WDC WD60 00HLHX-01JJPV0 SCSI Disk Device (SATA) 32 °C

Any advice and peoples experiences on what card to get for this computer would be great Thank you :)

Tested video cards for Photoshop CS6

Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CS6*. This document lists the video card by series. The minimum amount of RAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CS6 is 256 MB. Photoshop 13.1 cannot display 3D features if you have less than 512 MB of VRAM on your video card.
Important: This document is updated as newly released cards are tested. However, Adobe cannot test all cards in a timely manner. If a video card is not listed here, but was released after May 2012, you can assume that the card will work with Photoshop CS6.
Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model. (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)
nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 series
nVidia Quadro 400, 600, 2000, 4000 (Mac & Win), CX, 5000, 6000, K600, K2000, K4000, K5000 (Windows & Mac OS)
AMD/ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series
AMD/ATI FirePro 3800, 4800, 5800, 7800, 8800, 9800, 3900, 4900, 5900, 7900
AMD/ATI FireGL W5000, W7000, W8000
Intel Intel HD Graphics, Intel HD Graphics P3000, Intel HD Graphics P4000
Note: ATI X1000 series and nVidia 7000 series cards are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in Photoshop CS6. However, some basic GL functionality can be available for both these

Have you e mailed Adobe ?

And they still don't necessarily work. I have a Dell laptop with the Intel HD Graphics card and it will not run the Painting program in CS6. I updated the drivers and everything else that was recommended. still won't run it. Unfortunately laptops can't have the graphic cards changed so, don't reckon I'll be running that.

No I've not emailed Adobe yet. I've looked at their hardware specs for CS6 but they pretty much just advise on getting a Quadro. I don't actually get a message telling me that it's not supported, Photoshop just crashes whenever I try to use any of the graphics accelerated features like the blur tools. When I look at my computer spec the graphics seem to be the only weak link that I can see.

under edit > preferences > performance uncheck the advanced open GL option and see if it works then stably if so then it will have to be a gpu upgrade

Ok thanks I'll try that I'm just reinstalling my computer I'll try it when I've reinstalled Photoshop. What cards are people using for CS6? I don't do 3D and I don't game. I'm a photographer so I'm editing large files. Basically I dont have a unlimited budget, I just need CS6 to work!! Thanks

90% of 1 gig cards will work I would aim at at nvidia 1 gig cards you can them for around $40 and will perform well enough nothing amazing in performance wise but should get you by. seems a shame to limit performance on Graphics card when you have a high specced machine

Hoogle is right. I am sorta surprised you are having issues with 512mb on a separate card..I have 1 g on mine and with CS5 no problems. Do you have a separate scratch drive set ?

Yes I have a 600GB drive on which I have created a partition for the scratch disk and camera raw cache. I'm surprised the 512mb card doesn't work. I would say that CS5 ran perfectly, I only had a problem when I upgraded. I'm sure that it's the graphics that is the problem as I can't see what else it can be looking at my spec. Does anybody have any experience with CS6 that knows a reliable card?? At the moment I'm looking at the NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB or the NVIDIA GTX 680 2GB as they have performed well in the article I originally posted. Thanks

I just bought and installed the NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB in my box for CS6. (I had to upgrade my power supply, so check your max rate on your current one - the card needs 450W or higher)

So far, it runs fine, and my tower is ultra quiet. I find that some rendering (blur filters and other stuff) are little slow, but I have been told that's an issue with my memory (6GB RAM), and not my graphics card.

Just FYI. The NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB was just recently on sale at FRY'S if you live in the U.S.

Good feedback! I was surprised with your issue, but the positive results make it worthwhile.
