Gradient tool & layer mask

I'm having a problem with this. I was watching a tutorial where the person used a layer mask on the a layer image then used gradient tool on the layer mask however when I do this, the gradient doesn't apply on the layer mask. I believe they were using cs6 while I'm using cs3. Any advice?

Do you have the 'Mask' selected when you create the gradient?

Click the 'mask' thumbnail in the layers panel....this will select it...



It should be outlined in some way to denote its selected.

You neglect to give any information on what does happen so this is a best guess.

Also check to see what the blend mode is set to for the gradient, make sure it's set to normal and not something like screen

This is it! I never even saw it, it was set at difference. Thanks a lot, I googled a solution before and it seemed the same method for cs3 so I was at a loss.
