Gradient Shapes

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it, so I'll ask again.

Is there any way to make a gradient in any shape, instead of simply a circle or a square? Can I , for instace, make a gradient come from the center of an oval to the edges of the oval uniformly? I have created gradients in a wide variety of shapes in Word, so surely I can do it in Photoshop...\:]

I'm not explaining myself very well, so if you need clarification, I'll try again.

Thanks!

Welcome to PSG!
Yes, but you don't have to use the Gradient Fill Layer Style. What you need to use is the... Stroke Layer Style!
Yes, Stroke to have shape-fitting gradient!

Use those settings:

Position:inside
Fill type:gradient
Style: shape burst
