Gradiant from layer to layer problem?

Hey guys.

I'm pretty new to the whole photoshop thing, so hang with me!

The effect I'm trying to acomplish is pretty simple, at least I think so, but my knowledge with PS:CS is much much simpler :).

What I'm trying to acomplish is an effect where one object FADES into the other. An example:

A Red playing card, fading into a blue one starting about at the 1/3 mark.

No matter what I do It will fade out ONE WHOLE color. Can somebody possibly explain how I can do this?

And IF possible, provide a simple picture of the final product? Just so I can make sure I made myself clear. Also it doesn't have to be the playing card thing either. A Fading/morph of any two objects will certainly do!

Try applying a black to white gradient to a mask. The mask button can be found next to the layers effect button at the bottom of the layers pallet.
 
Sure thing! But I ran into another problem!

Heres the thing. That Red to blue was just practice. I have a layout of a deck of cards laying down, with one card leaning on it. So I will make the red fade into the blue on the deck which is laying down. But how do I go about fading the card which is resting on the deck, but slightly off of it?

Let me show you what I mean . . .

I want the deck to fade from red to blue, and the card to fade from the Ace of Spades, to Another ace. I have taken two identicle pictures. Same pose as this one, but with a blue deck, and a different ace.

The problem is, If I fade the back of the deck from red to blue, I can't fade the Ace, because it will fade the whole deck to one color, correct? Does this mean:

1. I need 4 different pictures? Actually 2 of each color, to where as I fade the deck from color to color with one 2 pics, then the card from ace to ace?

2. Or do I just have to select the ace, and just mask that one Ace?

Whats the easiest way to acomplish this, if you understand?

If I understand you right, all you will need to do is paint on the layer mask with a soft brush instead of using a gradient.

Try an experiment using black, white, and various shades of grey to see how a layer mask works.

;)
 
So I would apply that layer mask, then possibly use the gradient for the first color chage, then on the Ace, use a soft brush, and brush fade what I need/want?

GRR. 2 More things, please .

I tried using the brush - But How do I get it to show the under lying layer? I can do it with the eraser, but not with the brush .

And 2. How do I get both pictures to line up correctly!? Everytime I shoot them, They won't line up . . . I did trace the outline of the decks, and where the card should lay. The positioning for that is fine. But it seems, I"M never in the same spot to shoot it. One's always "bigger" than the other . Any tips?

Not sure what you are doing. Painting black on the mask should reveal what is underneath. Are you on the correct layer?

To line up the two pictures, I would set my camera on a tripod. Then I would mark where i placed the original deck and ace. After I took the picture, I would replace the deck and ace, taking care that I placed the new deck and ace exactly as marked. I would then shoot the second picture. Any other method would be strictly guesswork.

Hmmm, I shal try and re-do painting the black onto the mask. Come to think of it, the color may have been WHITE ad not BLACK.


I have traced on paper, the outline of the deck, and made a line for wherre the bottom of the card laying on the deck should hit. My MAIN problem - is ME. I will try a tripod. The decks are in the same spot, but I'M moving.
