I honestly think the best way is to pick something you want to do. In my case if was photo manipulation. I started searching for tutorials on what I wanted to do, then just did it.

I did the same with text effects. I love doing fun things with text and set out to learn how to do them.

Photoshop is such a huge program with so many aspects that even professionals never really learn it all. You have to break it down in to small pieces.
