"Ghost lines" when using a layer mask

I'm putting together a collage with 12 pictures. However, I can't get rid of those "ghost lines" or hard edges of the pics I'm erasing. I've done collages several times before without this problem so I'm assuming I must have pressed a "wrong key" to trigger a different setting? I tried both hard- & soft-edged brushes.
Brush setting: Mode-normal Opacity-100% (I've tried different values b4) Flow-100%.
Layer opacity-100%

How do I get rid of those edges?

TIA.
