Fitting other clothes on a picture of me

Hi there, I'm a complete newbie here. I've done a search and didn't find anything previously asked that fitted what I'm looking for so if I'm repeating an earlier thread I appologise - just direct me to it.
What I'm looking to do is edit an image of a friend, placing an item of clothing on them (an image of a jacket from a retailer's website) so it looks like they were wearing it. The only problem is that (obviously) the image of the jacket does not match up exactly with the pose that my friend is in in the photo.
Is there a 'best practice' to manipulating the image of the jacket so that I can make it look as realistically as possible as though he is wearing it?
I realise I could simply cut the arms of the jacket and move them around to be in line with his pose, but then the shoulders look weird.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatfully appreciated :)

People don't build their own house unless they know how to build one, so why would you do projects with Photoshop, without knowing how the program works?

Do you mean what I just quickly done below?:

If so, select the item of clothing, make it a smart layer, free transform it (Ctrl+T) then play around with perspective and warp
