Fit image into selection?

Hello

Is there an option to fit an image into a random selection (for example fitting a square edged image into a triangle selection)

How much experience do you have with Photoshop? It sounds very much like you need to start at the very beginning with basics.

The two objects should be ideally on separate layers, though it can be done with selection and the move tool if on the same layer. It is easiest though to have objects on two layers.

Once your render or shape is on the top layer, move it into position.

If it is too large, use the edit>transform>scale option. If you hold down the shift and alt/opt keys, it will resize by the center point. If necessary, activate the move tool at the top of the tools, or press the V key. Then use your cursor or the arrow keys to shift its position.

Hope this helps. If not, come back and say so, and post your images so we get a better idea of what you want to do.

Make a triangle shape and fill it with a color on its own layer

place your image you want in that shape on the layer above it transform it to correct size

Right click that layer and select clipping mask

That will now dispaly only the image that covers the triangle making your square image now a triangle.

so this is the square image I want it to get compressed inside the triangle - the very lower part shouldnt compress because the length of the square = length of triangle bottom.

but the upper and middle part should compress, I tried to use transform scale but it makes the whole square gets compressed I hope you understand what I want to do.

I made a white triangle into a layer under the square image layer I dont know whats next

Note to answer ibclare question Im not experienced with photoshop aside from selecting stuff and messing with blending options

edit: I also tried create clipping layer option it does make a triangle but not using the whole image

I am not 100% sure what you want then. if you are going to cut a square into a triangle you are going to loose data somwhere along the lines

Actually, your use of the word compress is not clear to me. I am trying to understand. I think you want to circles spread throughout the triangle but scaled to fit as they go toward the top, getting smaller as they go. Or do you simply want them to fit inside the triangle, the size they are currently? I think the former . . .

The only way to do this is through transformation and that will totally distort the circles. You could make separate layers of groups of circles and resize them, but the results would not likely be what you want. Photoshop does not have the brains nor algorithms to interpret this job. At least as far as I know. Someone will come along and correct that assumption if there is a way.

I think your best bet is to recreate them, groups of the same size more or less on separate layers. If you want the triangle to be blue, you make that on the bottom layer so you have both your reference shape and your desired color.

You can easily use the shape tool set to one of the different sizes and colors. The shape tool will make its own layer. Make each of the sizes you want first. For example, make 5 sizes placed about where you want them. Now name each of these, eg: large, med-large, medium, etc.

Now go to the large circle shape. Make a layer above it, keep it selected. Ctl/cmd click on the shape thumbnail, and fill it with the next color you want.

Next, make sure you have the move tool selected (shortcut key = V), and just move it where you want it. If you want a copy of that, keep the selection active, hold the alt/opt key and move the circle again; that will make a copy. Repeat for all your colors.

Then repeat for size and color. If you need to move any of the circles you have made on a layer, enclose it with a selection tool, such as the marquee or lasso, when you move it with the move tool, the marching ants will select it.

Here is a schematic. If this isn't what you want to do, I guess I need more detailed explanation . . .

Hey yep thats exactly what I wanted to ask about I think it would be very helpful if photoshop could do that automatically
but I guess it doesnt - I would have used it for different things in future
Anyway for this example it's easy to just draw them again so it wont be a problem I was asking mostly for future reference

Thankyou for your input
