Not sure if I should add this one to my portfolio or not. I'm not sure if there was enough I could do with it.
What do you think?

It looks like that first one was doctored in the first place (bevel emboss around torn edges) ............. just saying

I agree, but it's just from the photo being in REALLY bad shape. The photo is literally falling apart in pieces and the front was separating from the back. The curling up front section got dirty and grey from years of sitting around like that which is what's giving the beveled and embossed look.

I guess it points to your question about putting it in your portfolio, You asked what we think, I think maybe no not that one. But I'm old and senile dont pay attention to me:mrgreen:just ask anyone in avatar war thread (but read the first post before asking):bustagut:

We'll I was leaning towards not using it but I thought I would get some other opinions. Oh and I've been a casualty of avatar wars before, luckily I got out alive. :)

Out of focus pics are just about the hardest to restore, I hate them.

Some great work there sharpening detail.

Good colours, you have revived them but still kept them true to period.

There is repair ghosting on the upper right doorframe.

Some discolouration around joins in cladding (may just be the uploaded pic though).

The crop on left is a bit severe, it would be worth the time to restore that part also, even if just for practise.

Not being critical of your work, it's not an easy pic to restore, just saying what I see.

Is it sharpened as much as you can do? Have you tried high pass? Like the Angela portrait, I think this one needs a bit more contrast and that will help your opinion of it I think. Old photos always lose color intensity and depth. Maybe even a vibrance adjustment.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I agree, the crop is a bit severe and will probably add a bit back to the photo, I just figured what was there was completely non essential to the picture so off with it's head. :)

Ghosting on door frame, got it! :)

I tried the high pass and it didn't really do anything so I think that as much clarity as I'm getting out of it for now. getting rid of the blurriness was all done with brush work so I will have to go back and take it a little further if I can. :)

A little tinkering. Here is what evolved. High pass, about a third of the way to the right, fade to soft light, ~60%.Curves over entire image, brushed out some of the increased grey on girls bib area.Selected bright faces, hands, collar of girl and boy's cuff. Feathered just slightly, I think 3 pixels and tightened edge of selection. Brought up blacks and increased gamma. Used adjustment mask to soften the effects selectively.Used clone tool to fix the legs and around them. Unfortunately, even at her age, she might otherwise need to go on a slimming program for the legs, lol.JEPG result and screen capture:

You might get away with more high pass or make a selection of the features and add the high pass again. It will brighten them but if you do that before applying curves and levels, it might work out OK. And my clipping the adjustments is just habit . . .

just my opinion here,
but that photo is a loss without repainting. Not portfolio material if you ask me. Blur is a pita portfolios usually show your best work, I've seen him do better. Maybe have a clause with the picture stating unblur is not possible without changing repainting the image, which usually means losing the original detail but then again detail was a mess anyway, so damned if you do, damned if you don't... present your best, not what could be....... just saying

Agreed! I am not going to use this, and am moving on to some better samples. Thanks again for all of the input folks. :)
