I'm very new to Photoshop 6 and already I have a problem. When I try to use filter - render - lighting effects my system freezes and I have to reboot. The same thing happens when I try to use Extract. I would be very grateful if anyone could shed light - excuse the pun - on this problem. I use windows 98.
Cheers.

Welcome :righton:

I am not familiar with Windows but that sounds like it could be a memory issue to me,but someone who uses your OS will be more help then me on this problem :D

Welcome Scots! That's all that I can say. I'm no "techie" either, so I can't help you out with your problem...:(

However, take heart heart that one of the "pros" will get back to you soon on this! :)

Scots
sound to me like you are a little short on RAM. This kind of thing used to happen to me untill I upgraded 8[ 8[

Yeah, Kiwi & Rick could be right on this one Scots. PS is a hog! :D

Welcome to the board Scots Ian :righton:

It's always important to have enough memory of course, but without it you would also experience a lot more problems.
I have experienced the same crashes while using the liquify tool. Most of these crashes are related to your graphics driver. Chris Cox, one of Adobe's Photoshop developers, is always mentioning in the Photoshop forums that most of these problems are video related and that you should always install the latest drivers. I updated my driver and by doing that all of my liquify problems were history. I have read however that some people still seem to have crashes while using the lighting effects filter. Even I experienced crashes with this filter in the past, despite updating my video driver. Updating your driver is not going to harm your computer and will probably solve most of your problems. Make sure that you have the latest directX version and enough RAM. If you still experience crashes after this, please come back and I can look even deeper in my bag of tips & tricks :bustagut:

Good luck :righton:

Thanks to everyone who suggested what my problem might be - lack of memory seems to be the consensus - I'll work on it. What a great bunch of people you all are. Many thanks.

I feel for ya! I have been there and done that! Here is a thread we had that has lots of info on memory use and photoshop.

Also I had the same issues you are having. Found out it was a little program called Zone Alarm. If I have that on when I am using pshop I get the big freeze. So I decided two firewalls were enough and trashed the program and PS has been a happy baby since! When I first started using Pshop I had 256mb of ram and I had some problems. Went to 768 mb of ram and all is well. (I also had my memory settings too high in the prefs[shhh] ) Let us know how it goes for ya!

**Also here is another thread that has some great links Gaus found for me on memory and Photoshop!

Great info & links, Gaus and Linda! :righton:

Scots, you might want to try running PS without having any other programs open? Just a thought...

Alright, I have PS CS4 and a fully loaded 8 Core 3.2 Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM and I have PS constantly crashing on me when I try and run the render lighting effects filter on specific files. It is extremely annoying and there does not seem to be a work around. I even tried running it using Rosetta and it seemed to get worse. Anyone else having anything like this happening to them? Super frustrating!
