My Filesystem has suffered a superblock error and I can't access photoshop. i don't know how long it will be until i can find a way of fixing the error. it seems like it doesn't want b***er off no matter what i use or try to fix it with. It may require a full reinstall of my system. I will still be on Photoshop gurus but probably not as much, i had myself prepared for these errors and installed fedora on the side just in case. but fedora+wine+photoshop CS5 = nothing useful and tbh, fedora is a tad more confusing than ubuntu could ever be.

so just to warn you. i won't be posting up many images, not that i do these days anyhow, but y'know apart from the things i had on my phone and on my external hard drive ready to post up anyway.

If anyone knows how to remove or repair Linux filesystem superblock errors, please don't hesitate to tell me.

Have you deleted tempory files if not you may be able to restore old versions of system files if you have not done to much since you last used photoshop etc. It would also help if you new what section of your hard drive the damaged system files are in.

You could try it but it is a long shot
# dumpe2fs /dev/hda3 | grep -i superblock
That in a new terminal should bring up a list of all your suberblock files and backups
followed by

Primary superblock at 0, Group descriptors at 1-1 Backup superblock at 32768, Group descriptors at 32769-32769 Backup superblock at 98304, Group descriptors at 98305-98305 Backup superblock at 163840, Group descriptors at 163841-163841 Backup superblock at 229376, Group descriptors at 229377-229377 Backup superblock at 294912, Group descriptors at 294913-294913

But obviously you need to know what block your damaged files are in and you could end up doing more worse than good.

Can I reccomend you getting some linux based disk image recovery software I couldnt live without mine (windows based) Its simple you format your hard drive
reinstall everything you want and check it all works good
load up your disk image software (I use Acronis true image)
Take an image of your C: or whatever drive you have installed your operating system and store it on another partition (preferably another hard drive. USB pen etc
activate it to boot at startup (mine if I press F11 at boot up it will load into acronis)
That way if you ever get in trouble you tell your computer to restart press fll at your bios flash screen and restore image.

My Pc with fresh install of everything can take me upto 12 hours with a disc image it is restored to how I recirded my image in 7 Mins even to the point of all my emails or even what web page I was on when I created the image.

It is a lot easier and quicker
Check out this open source for Linux software
http://www.partimage.org/Main_Page

or research your own

I am sure you will be impressed and if your like me if my computer ever starts to get laggy I restore an image that is like a factory reset
but with all my software on ready to go.

I can't help you with your problem Zee but it might be a good idea to deactivate PS in case you need to format the drive.
I know you can't access PS so you can't deactivate it that way but you can call Adobe and they should be able to help.

It may be easier than trying to explain why your trying to activate a copy of PS that's already active.
Have your serial number handy.

ah! that may be a good idea to deactivate it thanks steve, i'll remember do that now before i forget.

@hoogle, would that work when i can't get to the terminal? i am literally met with status: [DRDY ERR] time after time before i am finally allowed to type in a command, i tried to force a fsck but it couldn't find the command. so i guess i'm SOL

I'll try the recovery software though. and i might just reinstall ubuntu 10.10 rather than the latest versions seems less buggy and more trustworthy.

well i managed to fix the error through fedora's root shell prompt thank god, but i don't know how much damage has been done to the filesystem, i'll give it a boot up and take a look.

If it was that bad then I wouldnt risk it I would just deactivate your software format and reinstall otherwise your just going to be waiting for another problem after problem.

no damage done, but i'm reinstalling everything anyway and keeping the prompt i used in my head for next time i'm met with the error.
