Extending an image while enlarging it?

Hi all, I'm not exactly sure what the proper term is for what I'm trying to do; I used to know how to do it, but no more - So I'll just explain my problem.

I have an image that I'd like to fit to some grid lines on a template. Easy enough. But after I fit the image within the grid lines, I'd like to have Photoshop make the image extend outwards to the edge of the Background, using it's magical powers to estimate what the image would look like if it actually extended out that far.

Can anyone help me with doing this?

In addition, is there an easy way to resize an image while still keeping it to scale with the mouse rather than the Image>Image Size way?

Thanks again anyone who can help!

Yes, use ctl+t (transform tool shortcut) hold down the shift key (alt/opt + shift if you want it to expand from the center; if you're not sure what I mean, try it and see but probably not for what you want to do here), grab a corner handle and draw it out. Not sure what you mean by the magically extend out as if part, but this might answer your question.

I forget what the effect is called But what I think he/she wants to do is make it look as if an object is extending further than the picture frame???

OUT OF BOUNDS is the name i think

We had a challenge on this a while back.

Not exactly, though that is a cool effect. I have a 2D image and I just would like to have Photoshop predict what the outer edges of the image would look like if the picture actually was that big. Sorry if I'm not making too much sense.

Thanks, I needed that.

Any chance you can provide an image (perhaps from a google search) that has the effect you are talking about? I for one cannot imagine what it is you are trying to describe if its not the Out Of Bounds effect mentioned by Paul.

I don't know how to show it with a picture, but it's like the Content-Awareness Fill, except instead of filling in a spot on the picture, I'd like to extend the canvas around the image, and then have photoshop imagine what the image would be like, were it that big. For example, if there was a building on the edge of the image, then ideally the building would continue to the white canvas space that has made the 2D image larger.

Sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well.

 sorry mate but you really either need to post an image of what you are talking about or try and explain it differently because at the moment i am at a loss.

I'm very curious now! I almost always have at least some idea of what the OP is asking........not this time. I thought it would be a transform function as Clare suggested.

Do you know for a fact that Photoshop is capable of doing this or are you just hoping it can do it? Where did the idea or concept come from?

I would love to see the closest possible example you can find of the effect .

Not sure but I think s/he's referring to transparency what's this white canvas space background?

Ok, I gave it another read. Could this be what your referring to?

The building is extended into the extra canvas.
(very bad job, done very fast to provide sample)

I'm pretty sure what she wants is this: Imagine an image that doesn't completely fill the entire canvas (ie, there are transparent edges around the image). She wants software that will guess what is just outside the boundaries of the image and fill the remainder of canvas with what it thinks is there, ie, as if she had shot a photo with a wider angle lens than the one actually used. A common use of this technique is to fill in the empty triangular edge slivers after you correct an initially tilted photo.

As you know, content aware fill can (sometimes) do this reasonably well if the missing region is relatively small and featureless. If content-aware fill doesn't guess right, then you are stuck filling in the edges with similar material from somewhere else in that image or overlaying that image on a similar but larger one, and then blending in the transition.

HTH,

Tom

Well Matty, as we are all guessing, I'll take mine. I think you want to use something like content aware alright, but you have to do part of the thinking for PS. Let's say you take the marque tool and cut and move a piece of the building, sky, etc. I think you might be able to use content aware at that point to fill it in; CS6 has gotten more sophisticated with this but I don't have it (yet). I'm not sure of the capabilities of content aware as you have a blank space to fill. Someone else can advise; I just never have much call for it. Then to straighten out lines, there is a tool in ACR generally used for straightening horizons you might be able to use to straighten out the tops of the bldg sections. But I would just use transform, ctl/cmd and direct handles.

In any event, Photoshop cannot "guess" what you want unless you tell it, and it isn't much good with spoken languages, as far as I know. Klingon maybe?
