Exclude black background

I've made a nice effect on a render on a black backgrond. Is there a way to exclude the black, so only the actual image remains? Since it's some sort of fire-like effect, there's no way of only selecting the black and deleting in.

Anyone tips?

The flames for this were just like your flame renders, flames on a black background
You can get your flames like this by changing the layer blending mode of the flames to screen

Yes, that works indeed. Isn't there a way to make the way it looks in 'Screen', the way it looks when it's 'Normal'? (hope you get the question)

Since I'd actually like to tweak it a little bit; I want the yellow-like color it has now to be more blue. If I change that via hue saturation, the black changes to a more blue color too and then you can still see the dark background when the layer mode is changed.

open up your image in ps

Right click the flame layer and select blending options
and move the blend if slider for blacks in wards
then hold alt and drag the slider back this will split the slider and allow for a smoother transition
