Everything stays gray

When I try to replace a color in an image with another color, it keeps coming up as gray. I tried a different method by adding a new layer and painting it the color I wanted, but it came up gray too!

Not much info here.

Try updating your video driver.
Try disabling graphics card acceleration, different versions of PS have it listed differently but go to Edit|Preferences|Performance

I'm trying to change the white on the zebra pattern to pink. When I select pink or any other color from the dialog box, it only changes to gray.

I'm not having any issues with the flag image.

Is it in RGB mode? It's probably greyacale which the flag clearly is not. Go to image>mode>rgb.

it will say image>mode>greyscale if it needs to be converted

Ah yes, the sneaky grayscale image mode. It slightly irritates me when it switches over without me knowing lol.
