Eraser brush only has hard edges

Hi
My eraser brushes all have hard edges. I am working in RGB and the paint brush tool has the usual option for soft and hard.
When I select the eraser the brush display looks real hard - (no aliasing in the display) when I click on brush name the display shows the soft edges, but when I use the brush its a hard edge erase with no aliasing whatsoever
Has something become corrupted in the installation?

Where you pick which brush to use, soft or hard, look along dose it say brush or pencil see image attched
