I have read various message on end-of-file issues but am still having problems. When I open Photoshop, the error message I rec'v is "could not load actions because end-of-file was encountered" When I click ok, the next error message is "could not initialize Photoshop because the preference file was invalid (it has been deleted). What gives...any help is appreciated?

If it doesn't I'm sure other suggestions will follow, let us know, Good luck

what you suggested worked! I deleted the preference when I opened up photoshop and it seems to have done the trick. I restarted to see if any other issues are happening, but it looks like (for now) that my problem is solved. I have gone thru several images, saving them in various formats and going back and forth and it appears to be working.
thanks for your help.

SOLUTION!

Ok I just had a panic attack myself, a week long project that just 1/2 hour ago got the dreaded "end of file encountered" in photoshop. I had an almost 300mg photoshop file with a good 40 layers on it and being about 3/4 of the way done with my artwork, I was pretty upset. The backed up file on my external backup drive was also corrupt. I checked out many of these forums to find an answer with no luck...and the only answers I did find suggested opening in Illustrator, which would open it flat.

So I tried opening it in Corel Painter 8 which has support for PS layers. It worked! I was able to open the file, save it to a different location, and was able to reopen it in Photoshop. I would think any program that can accept PS layers may work as well. (if there are any)

I dont know if this caused the problem, but I have my backup scheduled for 9:30 at night. Many times I am working at that time,,and it is possible that I saved the file while the backup was running...so I changed my backup schedule to later at night and scheduled the computer to shutdown an hour after that. Hope that was the problem. Because I dont need this... good luck all, pass this solution on and I hope it works for all of you as well.

I use COREL DRAW , so yes, it does work.... but not all the time. There were a couple of files that I resaved in Corel to PS and didn't quite export properly. Maybe something MAJOR wrong with the file in the first place.

The problem is not eveyone has Corel Draw or Paint. And I don't know if there are other apps that can import adobe layer files.

Yeah everyone doesnt have Painter, thats for sure.

Even though it did work, and I was able to then open up the file in PS, I did notice that all of my 'groups' were gone and my layer styles were also missing...but I can deal with that as long as the file will open!

Well.... I panicked the first time it happend to me. Then I remembered the Corel function. Saved me a few times.
What's important the image files are there. You can rework the styles and whatever arrangements you had .

Tho I never thought of trying it, ..... I suddenly remembered Corel has a plugins function..... and I think some of the plugins are similar to PS.... can it handle PS plugins? Gotta check that out.......
