Do I have to use the brush/pencil tool and color over each pixel one by one to create the shadow?
-Edit-

I found this tutorial:suryavardhan.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/embossed-pocket-design-using-photoshop/

I dont understand this part though
“Done. Now u can see the bottom part of First shape we made, the select the ‘Rasterised shape’ using square selection and clear it. After that use circle select to select the black shape
and feather your selection to 15px and then Invert your selection (Select Inverse), Like this
and clear the portion.”

Do I delete the rasterised shape I made? How do I use the circle selection tool to select the black shape if I deleted it?

The tutorial asks you to delete the bottom half of the square after applying the gaussian blur, after that you need to change to the circle marquee tool (shift m), make a selection of the square with the circle marquee and invert the selection with ctrl + shift + i , then press delete, that should clear your doubts
