Editing shutterstock vector file

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time to read/answer my question.

I would like to purchase some vectors files to make posters with. Before I do so, I would like to understand how I edit the files as they do not appear to be layered or able to be un-grouped. So, I have inserted an example here & would like to understand how I would go about editing an image such as this in order to use the individual characters & place them on say a white background.

I imagine that the designers intention was that each of these characters can be used individually, so I am assuming that there should be an easy way to separate them (rather than have to fiddle around using a selection tool or the like)?

If the designers intention was that they always be used on this biege background then its obviously easier as I can roughly select and match the colour, however I can't imagine that being the case as it would surely signifacntly reduce the likelhood of sales?

Apologies if its a thick question, however I am only starting out. Any support would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again, L

Hi loochaka and welcome to PSG.

As long as you don't save changes directly to the original file, your can separate the images from Shutterstock Vector file/image by using any of the selection tools.

This is only one of many ways to do this.

Open the image and duplicate, turn off the original layer.
Highlight the duplicate layer.
Choose your Lasso Tool an draw a selection around the animal you want to remove.
Hit Command/Control + J to copy that selection/animal to it's own layer.
Turn off the duplicate layer.

At this point you can do several things. Unless I really need a saved version of the separated image, I will usually just drag it with the Move Tool into whatever document I was needing it in. Once there, I could make other changes like removing it BG, color, postition and size, etc.

As far as the original document You can close it out without saving the changes or save it under a new name for later use.
