Duplicate A Group of Layers WITHOUT Linking

Seems simple enough. I have a packaging render I am doing with several artwork variations. Each variation consists of a group of layers, some text, some linked, etc. I want to run a new artwork variation by simply duplicating an existing group/variation. My challenge is that every time I change a link in the duplicate layer, it changes the same layer in the parent group. Which seems like insane default functionality to me, but I also believe that aliens obviously exist, so my judgement may be off. Hopefully someone here can lend a hand. My sanity hangs in the balance...

Yes, this is exactly how duplicated or "synched" smart objects work.
