I'm trying to learn how to do this but struggling.. A lot of the images seem to be based on real photos which is what I'm trying to do.

I've seen an artist vaguely describe their method which was that they draw the outlines in ArtRage, and then colour it in Photoshop. I've attached an image of just the outline by itself.

The lines seem so perfect so I can't imagine them drawing them all by hand.

The last 2 photos are an example of my attempt. My method was to blur the image a little, then posterize the image, then find edges which gives me a similar outline but just not as clean, so it makes it extremely hard to colour in with any control. It also adds some thicker blurred lines which just aren't helpful. This method is the closest I've come to achieving the effect but it's not quite there.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

Thank you!

Here's a method for converting an image to a line drawing.
1. Copy your image to a new layer and convert it to Black & White.
2. Copy that B&W layer to another new layer. Change the blend mode of this new layer to Divide. At this point, you should see an image that is almost entirely white.
3. Apply a Gaussian Blur to this layer. Start with zero blur and very slowly increase the amount of blur until you see a line drawing start to emerge. The amount of blur you eventually use will be to your own taste.
4. As an optional step, add a Levels adjustment layer and adjust the sliders to darken the blacks and lighten the whites.

Thanks for that! That method does give me a different outcome, sometimes better but it depends on the photo.

I assume this would be the first step to getting to clean lines like the example I attached. I guess I want to know how to get to that next step.

Is it something I'd have to take into Illustrator or something and start drawing the lines in? I've never used Illustrator so I'm not sure of it's capabilities.

pretty sure the 4th one is original work, about the others tho... i can guess image trace in illustrator, outlining ect ect... if it is autamated via filters and such it is very complex method using both photoshop and illustrator. in worse case for you the artist did automate the images just for refference and made the outilnes himself/herself colouring isnt that hard after that.

PS: id say its the second case considering s/he did alter the stuff shown on the picture, like adding hand with rose or making human into cyborg with exposed wiring....
