i i'm wondering about doing an upgrade on my PC's RAM from 3gb to 5gb, the RAM stick is being given to me by a friend who has just update their PC but I’m using ubuntu, and the RAM requirement is super low. and i can't play any intensive games due to wine (and my CPU). do you think i need that extra 2gb honestly speaking, what do you guys think?

i was thinking of going the full 16gb but i was thinking i wouldn't need so much RAM for a low requiring OS.

wow you are insecure about your pc end of the day what will your operating system support if it is a 32 bit version of ubuntu then it will only support upto 4 gig of ram but 64 bit system will support any amount. Then you have to consider the quality of ram is it 800mhz or 2200mhz the typical performance ram of 1600mhz or anything in between your system will clock all your ram down to the lowest speed you have installed so if you have 3 gigs of ram I am assuming is split over 2 channels so 1 gig and 2 gig with a clock speed of 2200mhz and you put in a 2 gig stick @ 800mhz then your whole ram will make your whole system almost 2/3rds slower when it comes to ram processing. however the extra ram could balance it out and still increase system performance. You may also have to get rid of 1 gig as the ram will want to run in parralell with each other so if you have 2 memory banks you can only pout 2 sticks in if you have 4 then then only filling up 2 banks with 2 x 2 gigs and 1 bank with 1 gig could make your system very unstable and prone to crashing. And then the final factor on hardware wise anyway is Ram will always work beter if they are the same ie 2 x sticks @ 2 gig 1800mhz made by kingston or corsair for example will run far better that 1 kingston and 1 value select ram at a slow speed of 800.

If it is all compatable and your system is stable with it all in and seems to work better keep it you can never have to much ram.

"oh yes i know what i'll do i'll tell my friend i don't need the RAM and go out and spend £1000 I DONT HAVE ON A USELESS INFERNAL MACHINE KNOWN AS A MAC!!"
Adam i've already told you i don't need a mac and nor do i want one, so unless you want me to scream at you and be really rude, refrain from telling me to get a mac because seriously not only is it pissing me off because i don't want a mac it's pissing me off because you think i should go and get one just because you say! this is about a friend giving me some RAM for my photoshop PC, no money is involved, i was asking whether to accept it or reject it as I’m not sure if i needed it. so please, do me a favour and shush.

Hoogle, thanks for the info, i'm insecure about this PC because it's broken down 6 times in the past year, and i'm trying to stop it breaking down the 7th time. all 6 parts were old (well, when i say old, they were from a Packard bell i had upgraded 3 months before building this one) thank god so i'm always doing preflight checks and diagnostics on this one. all my RAM is 800mhz if it running at double data rate 2, as it's an old interface anyway. but i'll make sure i check for errors and instabilities and whatnot.

As for the CPU cooler,if got an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro in there at the moment but it's fins are damaged and it's not cooling as well as it should be, that's why i'm trying hard in working in the freelance section so i can save up for liquid cooling, it's going to be allot of trouble though as the pipes need changing every six months don't they? guessing it's not very high power requiring either.

Honestly liquid cooling is more hassle than it is worth bot to mention the size of the tower needed I have built many systems using liquid cooling and all though they are quieter than fans there are a lot of errors that come with it. I would really consider the corsair option I put a link to it basically replicates liquid cooling as scores higher for the amount it cools. They also do a nitrogen version but that is expensive buying new cartridges for. Honestly though by the time you have paid for your cooling system you may find your cpu is damaged from over heating which could also damage your mainboard. My advice is being an AMD user you could buy a barebone bundle mainboard ram and cpu from £100- 300
for the latest high spec 6 core systems and they are good throw in an extra £30 - £140 you get a case as well even an extra £12 you have a dvd writer you may want to upgrade your PSU for about £40 but all in all you could have a top of the range AMD system for around £400 for everything replaced or if you keep your tower power supply and cd rom from your current spec £309 or step dow to model below cpu and only 4 gig of ram as to the 8 gig option at the top of the line £200. I know £200 is not that cheap especially to someone who is not working But if you are looking at £100 for a liquid cooling system not to mention any damage that can be caused until then from system over heating (usually justs shuts down without warning and safe but sometimes it can cause actual damage) Ask Mum if she could perhaps advance your allowance and early christmas present\ birthday present etc I am sure that she is more proud that her daughter is making money for herself and trying to save up for things herself andgetting paid work on here to want to help you out even if she cant afford the full amount any little helps right. Lets face it you could be at your local park sitting on a bench until late at night drinking vodka and smoking drugs like every other 15 year old I am sure she will help.
check out these bundles and see what you like they also do 0% finance for 3 months if your mum is willing to do that for you If you cant afford it all in 1 go.

the case i have is quite large, when i built the PC a year ago i intended it to be liquid cooled but i couldn't afford it at the time. i'll ask mum about the barebones kit, she might be able to help me out, we are thinking of building another one for downstairs and repairing and possibly giving mine a quad core phenom CPU to watch HD movies on and having some coop gaming nights (we love playing co-op games) and stuff so if the barebones kit isn't used as a backup/repair it can be the building blocks for the new one she was looking at parts for it not long ago, she has a monster machine in mind!! i think i may still have the old AMD stock fan around, i might have to reattach that until i can get the CWCH60 or at least a new cooler.
thanks for the suggestion hoogle
