Decrease canvas size by removing a selection from the middle?

Is it possible to reduce canvas size by having a set width or height removed from the center of the image and having the remaining sides collapse in together?

For example, say I have a 800x600 image, and I want to remove a 800x100 horizontal slice from the middle, thus reducing the image dimensions to 800x500.

Is there a (reasonably short) way of doing something like this in Photoshop (CS4)?

Yes, that can be done. But how you do it depends on the image. It would help if you posted one.

OK, here's an example.

before.jpg - Uploaded through Badongo - BADONGO
top0.jpg - Uploaded through Badongo - BADONGO
bottom.jpg - Uploaded through Badongo - BADONGO
after.jpg - Uploaded through Badongo - BADONGO

Ahhh, so the two pieces don't have to merge seamlessly. Here's one way:

1. Make a selection 100 px tall and place it over the part you want to chop out.
2. Hit delete.
3. Select the bottom piece that's left over, copy it to a new layer (Ctrl-J), and move it up until it touches the top piece.
4. Crop the image around the new boundaries.
