Hi - I'm very new to Photoshop, and have been driven mad by something I presume to be very simple, but can't find anywhere how to do it. I've bought a website template and need to change some of the images. I want to replace the rounded image below with the one currently rectangular, but can't discover how to cut out the exact shape I need. Hope somebody can help!
Thanks

Hi subienkow and welcome,

There are several ways to do this, but i used the pentool to make the cutout.
The sample below was a quicky.. so it isnt that good quality.

I think one of the other guys can give u a better explanation how to achieve things because my english is not good enough.

Good luck !

Thanks Stanislav - looks like it's fairly easily done, though any further detail from anyone would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Use the Shape tool. Set it to Path mode in the property bar and apply rounded corners. In the Path palette you can convert a path to a selection.

Selections can be Transformed for fine shapeing via the Selection menu, or the path can be transformed via the Edit menu.

I suggest you also take a look at the following tute.

Use the rounded rectangle tool to draw a rectangular path (not a shape!) , adjust radius in the option bar and now for the magic:

Select layer/add vector mask/current path

Done.

You can't do it faster or easier than this in my view. Extra advantage; you work with a path so you can always adjust it. Never use selections if you can do the same thing with a path. ;)

I have to echo JoeD on this one -- never use a selection when you have the opportunity to use a path. You will in most cases have a LOT smoother cut than a selection, and can EASILY be changed to suit your needs!! :righton: 8)) :B B7

Yes I agree. Clipping paths are preferable, hence the link to a clipping path tute.

I know nothing of web development, so a request on how to cut out the exact shape, may have been important in this case. And I still say it's a Shape tool in "path" mode...So there

8D 8D :D :D :D 8D 8D

Seriously, sometimes a specific request may be specific for a reason. Exporting the "cut" image, for use in another app for example, though admittably not, it seems, in this case.
